"Celebrate Literacy" is our theme for 2012. We will be performing original songs about the joys of reading, some of which are from
"Paint the Town Read" a CD produced in 2006 by
the Very Special Arts  in collaboration with Pat Cronley.

Last year we celebrated our hometown of Flint, MI.
Our series was entitled; "FLINT, the Original Motor City."

It is with great sadness that we learn of the passing of Dr. Billy Taylor, the mentor of Jazz on Wheels. Dr. Taylor founded "The JazzMobile" over 40 years ago in New York City. He took his jazz his throughout the Big Apple and their shows featured  some of the greatest jazz artists of all time. He was a kind and giving soul, sharing his talent and  knowledge relentlessly.

CONGRATULATIONS...

Congratulation to Ciara Curran. Ciara is off to Interlochen Fine Arts Academy in northern Michigan. She was awarded a scholarship for her singing and theatrical talent.  She has promised to return to the Jazz On Wheels stage for the 2012 season!

Congratulations also to Carot Dorve who received a scholarship in Music Performance at Michigan State University! He too promises to be back this summer!

Jazz on Wheels was founded in 2002 by Pat Cronley and other Flint area musicians. The concept is based loosely on Dr. Billy Taylor's JazzMobile, which performed mobile concerts in the New York City area in the 60s and 70s. Like the JazzMobile, our shows take place on the back of a truck which has been transformed into a stage. Our audiences over the years have consisted primarily of thousands of kids from the Flint Schools and surrounding areas. We have always operated on a donation basis which has made it possible for virtually all kids to experience our show.

Jazz on Wheels received it's 501(c)3 non-profit status recently which will hopefully allow us to expand and increase our efforts in order to serve even larger audiences. Our children are starving for good entertainment, something other than what is being offered on television and radio. Our show takes jazz music and presents it to the kids in way that allows them to see the connection between jazz and music of today. These kids HEAR jazz every day, on TV, in the movies, on their video games or maybe even their ring tones, but they very rarely get a chance to SEE jazz.
